'Extant' star Halle Berry says a "light" came on when she turned 40, and described the milestone birthday eight years ago as a "magical" moment in her life.

The 'Extant' actress, now 48, doesn't mind getting older, and insisted she "felt more self-assured" and self-confident after hitting the milestone age.

She told the Sunday Mirror newspaper: "I'm always learning, but I would say a magical thing happened when the big 40th birthday came.

"I felt like a light kind of just went on ... I felt more self-assured, more confident. Like I had the right to really be who I want to be."

The star also explained she has reached the stage where she is past caring what people think, and joked that nobody is actually interested in "what Halle Berry did or said".

She added: "Yeah. It doesn't matter what they think. Do people really care? Nobody goes home pondering what Halle Berry did or said!"

Halle went on to admit her priorities and goals are shifting, and while she's "gotten a lot" out of her professional life she's now striving for "something more meaningful".

She said: "There's a lot of things [I'd love to do]. I think I've gotten a lot out of this career, but I am starting to feel like I need something more meaningful to wake me up in the morning.
